Described as the gateway that links the South East of the country to the west and south, Tipperary has an extensive road network linking all the major cities and towns as well as the railway stations in the main towns.
The main road networks in South Tipperary are the M8 (serving traffic travelling from Dublin to Cork, via Cashel and Cahir) and the N24 route (passing through Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel and Tipperary town. There are proposals to upgrade the N24, including the bypass of Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel and Tipperary.
Irish Rail operates rail services to stations at Clonmel, Tipperary Town, Carrick-on-Suir, Cahir, and Limerick Junction. An hourly service connects Limerick Junction station (outside Tipperary town) to Dublin, Cork and Limerick. A daily service links the towns of Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir and Cahir to Waterford and Limerick.
Travellers arriving in or departing from South Tipperary have a choice of airports, with daily and weekly flights to numerous destinations. Cork Airport has daily flights to Dublin, Belfast, UK airports, and continental Europe.
Shannon has flights to the USA and daily flights to UK and European airports.
Dublin Airport is the largest airport with daily flights to the USA, Europe and Asia. An air coach service operates from Thurles to Dublin airport.
Waterford Airport has a daily service to Dublin, Belfast, and UK airports.
South Tipperary’s nearest ports are Rosslare and Cork. Rosslare Port, in Wexford, is closest to the UK and mainland Europe. Carriers operating on this route include Stena Line and Irish Ferries. Brittany Ferries and Swansea Cork Ferries operate services from Cork to Roscoff.
Bus Eireann and Kavanagh Coaches operate daily services to all of the major towns and villages in South Tipperary. The Ring a Link service provides transport in the rural areas on a weekly basis.
Local transport includes taxis, which operate in all the main towns and villages. Private coach hire bookings can be arranged to provide airport and hotel transfers as well as customised scenic tours. The Department of Education and Science, through South Tipperary VEC, provides subsidised school transport for post-primary students in rural locations.
